The main pull towards Macrobiotics for me is that IT MAKES SENSE and you needn’t get involved with any gimmicky potions or pills. It is what it is and it is just about how you feel and how to take care of yourself. The answer to how you feel starts with what you eat. Having incorporated a Macrobiotic diet and lifestyle for over a year now I have experienced many milestones to reassure myself that this is good for me … my mind clearing up, my insight improving, my confidence building and the increase in physical endurance that I experienced this winter, which is beneficial to my job as a professional ski instructor.

The Journey continues.. It was 16 years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and told that chemo may give me 6 months to live. I believed that and decided to not take the drugs but to begin my own natural healing. I was two months into my “healing” Journey when I discovered Macrobiotics. I learned a great deal with the books and self study. I met some good people at the K.I. (macro center) and their fellowship helped me along the way. I am still living the great life and at age 55 feel great still walk an hour a day and still enjoy the good foods from the earth. I will be leaving for China in two weeks to travel and learn for the next three months. Life is Great. I wish you all this Great Life as well.

In 2001 I was diagnosed with stomach cancer stage III, grade.My prognosis was 6 months, the most 12 with chemoradiation. After two major surgeries, and in the middle of chemoration, I got a consultation with Mr Kushi, who was the first human to give me some hope. In late April 2007 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer that had metastized slightly to my left pelvic bone. I went on a strict “Kushi Prostate Cancer Macrobiotic Diet”. I retained Verne Varona, an “OUTSTANDING” Macrobiotic counsellor with a strong Macrobiotic background.After 3 months my PSA dropped from 39.6 to 0.8, and my testosterone dropped from 426 to 10. ( I also took Casodex & Zolodex for about 2 months staring 5-1-07 and terminated both 6-1-07) I am now taking no drugs and am cancer free I also lost 21 pounds from 153 to 132 (height 5’81/2″ age 70) and many other positive changes are too numerous to go into.Macrobiotics should be a worldwide requirement – however the profit driven medical establishment is to ingrained and powerful to allow natural healing to curtail their money machines.Donald J Porter

Macrobiotics helped me in some expected and unexpected ways. The understanding about food was initially, meaning the first seven years, very important to me. But as I grew more knowledgeable about cooking, I began to discover a much deeper meaning of macrobiotics, and that has to do with freedom. It is possible to be attached to anything, even the best things such as spiritual ideals or philosophical beliefs.What I found was that my attachment to the principles of macrobiotics began to limit me. I had reduced the freedom of what I understood to be macrobiotics, through a certain degree of control over life. Life is so rich and dynamic, and yet the very principles of food that seemed to have helped me heal, many years earlier, were now causing unhappiness. My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer at age 40 in 1983. When the tears subsided and the shock wore off, I started looking for natural methods of healing cancer. I was at the vet’s parking lot when Mrs. Hohlefelder, mother of twins who were students of mine, met me in the parking lot.I’ll never forget her words, “Your husband does not have to die of cancer. Get Life Magazine’s excerpt of Recalled by Life by Dr. Sattilero and Tom Monte. He followed a macrobiotic diet.” That word, MACROBIOTIC, has altered my life profoundly from that moment to this day.I went to the library with my dog still in the car. I was so excited. So on July 19, 1983, I threw out all white sugar, meat, cheese and bought a pressure cooker. I tried so hard to be a good cook but I burned everything. I said to Joe, “If you don’t eat this, you’ll die.” His response was, “I know.” With great respect for the person who wishes to go to the spirit world, I let go.
He died in January, 1984. With two children to raise, I maintained my macrobiotic practice, which I do to this day. Many incredible doors have opened for me, since I embarked on my macrobiotic journey.

In 1976, I decided to enter the Realm of Yoga and Vegetarianism. It was Great…..but after 8 years of that, I was not healthy, and a look at Macrobiotics, began to tell me why.
I had developed so many allergies, digestive problems, abdominal pain, and low energy.
The allergies were so bad that it seemed i would have to move into a bubble to protect myself from the plants, pollens, dust , mold, animals and chemicals that i had gotten so sensitive to !I had been eating a lot of dairy, as a vegetarian for 8 years….and it seemed that my health had deteriorated…not improved….Much to my dismay!!! I ate vegan- Macrobiotic for 4 years and developed a B-12 deficiency, so I then began eating fish . I have been fine and very healthy since.

When I found out that I had Hepitius C several years ago, I began to search for some alternative way to battle this incurable disease.I found a web site that was created by a guy who had Hepitius C. He had discovered a special macrobiotic diet that could bring the disease down to a very controllable level so that your liver enzyme level would come back into normal range which greatly reduces the HCV’s ability to do any permanent damage to your liver.This is a very big accomplishment. This special macrobiotic diet basically gives your liver and entire system a break from all the non-food ingredients, sugars(including fruit sugar), alcohol, meats(except for fish), and the stress of your liver trying to figure out what to do with this stuff.Your system can very easily break down and assimilate the macrobiotic diet with little or no trouble. What happens is in about 3 month is all the good nutrients from eating this diet finally is filtered into your blood stream, and then you are getting the full benefit of this macrobiotic diet.
Your liver now knows what to do with this healthy array of nutrients and it gets a big break. Now it is able to get back to the task at hand of producing its own powerful interferon’s which is how it can slowly beat down the population of the HCV in your system which greatly keeps the HCV in check. At this point your liver is very capable of protecting itself against the disease and allot of other diseases. With this diet I have brought my HCV down to a low hum within a years time.
More so than any of the man made interferon drugs that I also tried in two 6 month futile attempts with cost on the average of $2500.00 per month. Plus the side affects from these drugs are sometimes worse than the HCV itself.
The man made interferon only has about a 49% cure rate at best. This special macrobiotic diet is much more affective at enabling your own liver to bring this disease down to it’s knees. Therefore letting you to live a healthier and longer live than you would normally with HCV.

I had started with juices and salads and that was helpful initially. But it led to problems. E.g. one cold rainy night, I ate a salad for dinner and woke up later with an asthma attack! I also developed a skin rash that would not go away for months. Macrobiotics helped me to understand why all those things happened.In general, macrobiotics and the idea of yin and yang help explain a lot of things.Needless to say, my health improved significantly although I never followed the dietary recommendations all that closely.ButI think macrobiotics also made me more adventurous, more assertive of myself etc. This eventually led to me and my wife separating – even though we were a fairly strong couple and we remain friends – and to lots of other difficulties in life in recent years. My life went through lots of upheavals in past five years or so.
Of course it is not just macrobiotics alone, but I think it played a big part. However, I feel this is all part of “restoring balance”. Overall, I am glad for all the things that has happened in my life, in spite of the difficulties.

I had chronic fatigue syndrome, terrible headaches and a rash on my right hand that I could only control with a steroid cream. Weight Loss with Macrobiotics is Amazing.
Weight loss has been the foremost desire of my life for many years, I weighed over two hundred and twenty-five pounds when I began to eat exclusively macrobiotic foods last| year.
After nine months, and a weight loss of over forty pounds I am impressed by this way of eating because of how I feel.
Deep inside my body, I know that this is a healing diet. I was lucky enough not to have a deeper health issue (except the obvious one of obesity) to overcome. Even so, I was desperate and unhappy about my weight, my struggle with food, my seeming inability to take charge in some way. Donée has inspired and taught me, supported and helped me all the way.
I have truly learned to love the Macrobiotic diet. I am so glad to prepare it, to learn about it, and to make the effort to use the best ingredients, and to share the ideas with others.

I realize that I’m not the only one who feels a profound life change with this diet. I for one, have found a peace that his eluded me for all the years before — here in the rice bowl that I now embrace.

Testimonial from a “fast food junky.”I was a fast food junky. I rarely, if ever, cooked for myself. Even if I did, I now know that what I cooked had very little nutritional value. I had grown up with the popular Mid-Western belief that milk builds strong bones and that meat and potatoes and green beans from a can could provide all my nutritional needs.
By the time I was in my forties I was sluggish, overweight and tired most of the time. In my early fifties I was diagnosed with cancer. It was removed surgically. Later that same year I was diagnosed again with another form of cancer. That, too, was removed successfully.
It was during this period of crisis that a friend introduced me to Donée who began to teach me, among other things, the value of macrobiotics. I had heard of macrobiotics before but was under the mis-impression that it was all about eating seaweed and grains. It sounded to me like an awful way to live. Donée taught me otherwise. She had to start from the ground up with me since I barely knew how to boil water. Fortunately, Donée is a very patient and loving teacher. What a great discovery this has been! Donée has taught me how to make dishes that are absolutely delicious. There is such a variety in macrobiotics that I have not tired of learning new recipes and a variety of preparation methods. For the first time in my life I absolutely love cooking for myself. I have also learned much about how the foods I cook affect my body and provide real nutrition. I have lost pounds and consistently stayed at a healthy and comfortable weight. For me this has been not just a physical experience but a spiritual one as well.
I am extraordinarily grateful for the macrobiotic way and Donée’s methods of teaching it through her cooking classes. Although I have read several books on the subject, there is nothing like the hands-on learning that Donée provides. Life After Breast CancerOn April 30, 1999 I underwent a lumpectomy on my right breast to remove invasive ductile cancer. I went through chemotherapy and 35 radiation treatments. After that I was left with a disease known as SCLERODERMA. I had crest syndrome which was centered in my hands and feet. There are only about 300,000 people afflicted with this disease. Bottom line, no medical cure or magic pill.
I did as much research as I could and decided that I needed to try something on my own to curb its affects on my body. A friend on mine told me about Macrobiotics, Donée Krause to be exact, I went to my first cooking class. in March of 2006. Boy, the food was good. I found myself losing weight without even trying. To date 30 lbs. My cholesterol also dropped 115 points. In the past losing weight or lowering my cholesterol was almost an unsurmountable task, but not when you follow Macrobiotics. You feel full and satisfied longer. I have given up a lot, but have gained so much more in good health and well being. And I try not to miss a single day of miso soup

Donée has also showed me how to make my own poultices to help relieve the pain and swelling in my fingers and toes. They have been a Godsend. Macrobiotics has made a tremendous difference in how I feel, think and approach each day!

Lowering Cholesterol
Before I consulted with Jeremy and Maria, I was completely ignorant about a macrobiotic lifestyle. Now I understand the importance of incorporating whole grains into my diet and the significance of avoiding processed foods.

Arthritis & Personal Chef Service
I first got in touch with Jeremy & Maria at the recommendation of my doctor in October of 2007. I was looking for a way to improve my health and my doctor believed that a Macro-Mediterranean diet would be very beneficial to me. At the time I did not feel ready to change my diet. I was worried I would not like the food or I would feel deprived, so, although I did initially contact Jeremy & Maria to learn about their program, I decided that changing how I ate was not a challenge I was ready for at that time.
In the beginning of May of 2008 I suddenly had to stop working as I believed that I had contracted Tuberculosis at the lab where I work. This forced me to stop my arthritis medication, which put me into a lot of pain, so much that I was rendered almost immobile. At this point my doctor urged me again to get in touch with Jeremy & Maria. She knew that they had helped others to improve arthritis pain through dietary changes and she thought that this could be one of my only chances for relief from the situation I was enduring. She made me aware that Jeremy & Maria offered a personal chef service and that I could use it to get the food I needed since I was in too much pain to either go to the store or do my own cooking at that time.
At this point I had a consultation with Jeremy & Maria over the phone and they designed a meal plan to target my specific conditions and then setup to have their personal chef start preparing the food they recommended for me.
I was still worried about liking the food, but as soon as my first week of food was prepared for me, my fears went away. The recipes were so delicious that some of them (like the veggie burgers), I loved so much that I was hesitant to share them with my family. I also was not hungry ever and so the experience was not like with diets I had tried in the past. I had so much food, actually, that my daughter even started taking my leftovers to work for lunch. Once she tried the food, she realized, as I did, that it was as enjoyable as eating the food we used to eat before, but with added health benefits.
The improvements in my health were quick to come. At the end of just the first week of food from the meal service, my arthritis pain had significantly improved. After eating like this for a month and a half, I lost 19 lbs. Now after 4 months I have lost 26 lbs. I had suffered for a long time from a lot of pain in my stomach and lower digestive tract. That has completely stopped. I have had trouble for the past few years with my liver and now my tests are suddenly improving as is my diabetes control. The only change I have made is how I eat. I also have developed an overall sensation of feeling better that I found totally unexpected and is almost the best thing I have gotten out of changing the way I eat. From these improvements I am convinced that this is the best way I can be eating and plan to continue eating this way from now, going forward.
After just four weeks using the Macro-Mediterranean personal chef service I now feel well enough to go to the store and cook for myself and my family. Through using the personal chef service I now feel familiar with the food and feel confident that I can learn to make it for myself. I have been given a new lease on life and am enjoying every minute of it.
I hope that my story can help someone else who was suffering like me to get the help they need.

Inflammation and Chronic Diarrhea
After personally experiencing three months of rapid weight loss and failed diagnoses, my primary care physician suggested I try eating a macrobiotic diet. A daily journal of my eating habits and poor health events suggested my body was reacting as though everything I ate was an allergen. Biopsies eventually confirmed the widespread inflammation.
My physician put me in touch with Jeremy and Maria who helped me tremendously. Their insight into what changes in one’s lifestyle must take place, their availability and their patience and nurturing along the way, week after week, made the transition actually do able for me.

The changes in my eating are still taking place as I come to accept that I must be fastidious in my dietary choices in order to maintain my health. I was unable to work for 3 months. Weight Loss & Off Blood Pressure Medication
Earlier this week the drug regime that aimed at treating my persistent hypertension was changed. My physician dropped the drug, Diltiagem (180 mg daily), from my prescriptions. He feels it is likely that my 20lb weight loss, the consequence of my diet changes since early October 2007, is a likely reason my current blood pressure readings have been consistently normal for several weeks. Thus the decision to drop this drug from my medications list. The changes in my diet have been due to my working with Macro-Mediterranean Holistic Nutrition. They have helped me to achieve things I never would have thought possible at my age (77). I feel the best I have in years. The tireless energy and increased mental clarity have been things I wouldn’t have expected. Thank You!

Gall Stones, Weight Loss, No Bloating & More Energy
I was having severe pain in my abdomen and my doctor diagnosed me with having gall stones. I did not want to have surgery, at least at that time, and she suggested a change in diet might help.
My doctor introduced me to Jeremy and Maria (J&M), who introduced me to the macrobiotic way of eating. They immediately e-mailed information to read about macrobiotics, and sent several simple recipes to get me started.
My husband was willing to change his way of eating with me… and so we started immediately. The recipes from Jeremy and Maria were simple, and once I found the ingredients, with help from J&M, were simple and quick to make. The most difficult part for me was cooking a new way, but once I settled in my mind to look at this as learning to cook for the first time, it became easier. The pain I was feeling in my abdomen was almost gone. J&M spoke with me weekly, encouraged me constantly.
As the weeks went by, more recipes arrived by e-mail, and J&M kept in touch with me. What was helpful is they asked me to keep a journal of what I was eating daily, e-mail it to them, along with questions I had, and they would respond letting me know what I was missing in my diet, and foods to add to it. Recipes were a constant, delicious, easy to make, and very much appreciated.
Soon, my husband and I noticed we were losing weight – what a bonus, especially for my husband who has always struggled with his weight and constantly trying new diets. The bonus…. this wasn’t even a diet. We were enjoying what we were eating. We found we had more energy. We never felt that bloated feeling you have when you eat too much at dinner. And some of the recipes were so delicious, that we did eat a lot – just never felt bloated.
Jeremy & Maria taught us how to change our diets without having to become fanatics. We do not miss the foods we removed from our diet, don’t even think about them.
J&M taught me a lot about the foods we eat, and how our system digests and uses the nutrients from them. We feel lucky to have met Jeremy and Maria, they have changed the way we look at food, and what to look for when checking ingredients. We are happy to have changed our way of eating and feeling much better about it. Can’t even imagine eating the way we used to.
As I look back, J&M made the change in eating go quite smoothly.
